The Values Project – 4 Freedom

Freedom is an interesting word in our culture – it could imply that there are no restraints or boundaries, ‘I can do whatever I want, and it doesn’t matter how it impacts anyone else’.

Galatians 5:13 (NLT) 13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

However, our take on the value of freedom is different, and is much richer and more life-giving. Our faith gives us healthy and helpful guidelines to live by – guidelines that focus on loving others, demonstrating the love of Jesus, and inviting others to know him.

Jesus sets us free, that we might serve him (follow Him, fulfil mission).

Galatians 5:1 (NLT) 1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

This verse summarizes ch 4, where the theme is slavery and freedom. Here is Christ’s will for our lives in a clear and refreshing way – He has paid for our freedom. Freedom from being slaves to sin and the law of legalism.

We value our freedom in Jesus. This is the will of God for you: your freedom.

But in Australia at the moment when we think of freedom this is not what comes to mind (but for our Baptist forebears, this was at the forefront).

Australia has 5 fundamental freedoms – freedom of speech, association, assembly, religion, and movement.
