Knowing God Better week 2 “Rooted, Built Up, Strengthened in Faith”
Well, 1 week down in 2017, this year is really getting away from us! Easter is just around the corner! Well, not really, but I did notice in some of the supermarkets this week that in some small pockets, the Easter Chocolates have already hit the shelves!
But don’t worry, despite what they might have us believe, we’re still only at the beginning of the year.
Just out of interest…
Who had came to last weekend and the beginning of 2017 with a new years resolution?
Resolutions are pretty common, often fitness and health related, and at this time of year you’ll notice the gym, fitness class, diet program adds start to fill up the TV. I was out for a run last Sunday evening and noticed just a few more people out than normal…I thought to myself “ah yes new years day”
Now we’re a week into 2017, so the question is not only who had a resolution… but who’s still going? Who’s keeping their resolution?
Who’s had a bit of a wobble this week, but you’re more or less keeping to what you decided you’d do this year?
Or 1 week in, who’s already failed, given up and the countdown to 2018 has already begun?
If you were with us last week Tony shared with us Paul’s prayer for the Colossian church from Colossians 1:9-12.
A prayer that they would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will, wisdom and understanding. That they might live obedient lives worthy of God, that they might be fruitful, strengthened with power and growing in the knowledge of him.
Whatever our resolutions are, whether we have them or not, the invitation was that we would know God better in 2017.
And so this morning I want to continue this idea of knowing God better and continue Paul’s thought in Colossians, particularly chapter 2, so if you have your Bibles with you, open up to Colossians and the text will be on the screen too.
Colossians 2:1-10
Notice the theme of knowing God in there again, particularly in verse 2-3. “My purpose is that they might be encouraged in heart and united in love, so they might have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
